Amazon today, it came to my attention that legendary rock band AC/DC doesn’t
have a true greatest hits CD out there. They’ve got two huge box sets, a pair
of live albums, and a couple of soundtracks that act as collections of hits,
but not one condensed package that provides a solid spectrum of their
discography. Given their long career, massive string of hits, and seeming
nearness to the end of the road based on band member illnesses, retirements, and
legal troubles, it seems to me that it’s time for one. What do you say, Angus?
Here’s my
take on what would make the perfect collection of AC/AC hits to finish off
their career. First of all, we’ve got to have a double entendre for a title.
For the band that insists it wants to be your “backdoor man”, nothing else will
do. How about “One Last Bang”? Fitting, I think. Then I’d include two new songs
featuring Brian Johnson on vocals and Cliff Williams on bass. Yes, Brian has
been told by his doctor that he can no longer perform live due to the damage it
will cause his ears, but last I read, he stated he could still record. I’ll bet
Cliff would agree to one last set of studio sessions as long as he didn’t have
to travel far to do it and Brian was on board. Let’s have a title track full of
lyrics about leaving the best thing you ever had behind but making sure you
enjoy “one last bang” before heading for the exit. For the other new track, I’d
suggest something sly about catching your girl with another man. Brian’s got to
be feeling a little slighted by Axl Rose finishing out the band’s current tour
in his place. Let’s hear him turn that venom into one last rock n’ roll FU.
The band
has too many great songs to limit this package to a single disc. Let’s assume
it’s a double album that we can squeeze two dozen tunes onto. With two spots
taken by our new tracks, here are the 22 other songs I’d add that represent the
best of their early to late hits. Yes, I realize six of them come from the same
album. When you have the fourth best album in rock and roll’s past 40 years,
that’ll happen.
